Here are some recommended gravel and MTB (or mixed) routes around Málaga and its surroundings:
1. Sierra de las Nieves
-
Starting point: the village of Monda, where you’ll also find cafés and bars for a coffee before or after the ride, as well as parking spots.
-
Terrain: wide and well-maintained gravel tracks. Along the way, if you pay attention, you may spot a pinsapo, a unique and protected fir tree found only in this region.
-
Route: climb steadily into the forest, then enjoy a fast descent into the village of Tolox. At the entrance of the village, on the left-hand side, there is a public fountain to refill bottles.
-
Return: quiet asphalt roads with light traffic lead you back to Monda.

2. Montes de Málaga
-
Starting point: Venta del Túnel, with both parking and dining options available.
-
Terrain: long climbs on gravel tracks in good condition, traversing the Montes de Málaga.
-
Descents: mainly on asphalt. Along the way, you’ll find several traditional restaurants perfect for a stop to enjoy local food.
-
Final section: cross Málaga city to return to Venta del Túnel.

3. Cala de Mijas – Istán
-
Route: an out-and-back ride along the same road. The route heads towards Ojén (without reaching it), and then enters the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, continuing all the way down to the whitewashed village of Istán.
-
Highlights: a long, winding descent into Istán, followed by the climb back on the same road. In the village, you’ll find bars and shops for refreshments.
-
Variants: it’s possible to extend the ride by descending towards Puerto Banús or Marbella and climbing back via Ojén, but this is not recommended due to heavy traffic.

4. Gorafe
-
Highlights: perhaps the crown jewel of gravel riding in Andalusia. The distance may be shorter, but the landscapes within the Geopark are breathtaking. Expect to stop often to take photos and enjoy the unique scenery.
-
Note: more kilometers could be added inside the Geopark, but this specific loop already makes for a memorable ride.
